Kashmir is beautiful in every season, but each one gives you a different trip. Here's how to pick the right time for yours.
March to May: spring and tulips
Spring is one of the most popular times to visit. The snow melts from the valleys, almond and apple trees blossom, and Srinagar's tulip garden usually opens for a few weeks in late March and April. Days are pleasant for sightseeing in Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
Good for: families, couples, first-time visitors, photography.
June to August: summer meadows
Summer is peak season. Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Gulmarg are green and cool while the plains are hot, which makes Kashmir a favourite summer escape from Delhi and Haryana. Book hotels and houseboats early — this is when prices are highest.
Good for: escaping the heat, trekking, Sonamarg and the Thajiwas glacier.
September to November: autumn colours
Autumn brings golden chinar trees, clear skies and fewer crowds. It's quieter and often better value than summer, and evenings start getting cold by November.
Good for: couples, photographers, travellers who prefer calm.
December to February: snow
Winter turns Gulmarg into one of India's best snow destinations, with skiing and the Gulmarg Gondola. Srinagar gets very cold, and some roads (like Sonamarg) can close after heavy snowfall, so keep a flexible plan.
Good for: snow lovers, honeymooners, skiing.
How many days do you need?
5 to 7 days is ideal to cover Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg without rushing. Add a night on a Dal Lake houseboat — it's the highlight of most trips.
What to pack
- Layers: even summer evenings are cool
- A warm jacket, gloves and waterproof shoes for winter
- Sunscreen and sunglasses (the sun is strong at altitude)
- Valid photo ID for hotel check-ins and checkpoints
